Music with Kingdom Principles

I love when a song is embedded with Kingdom principles! By that I mean music that isn’t a song implicitly about, or to, God. Nevertheless, it’s lyrics convey the same principles found in the Bible. It’s words speak the same as the heart of God. Those are the songs I refer to as “music with Kingdom principles”.

Consequently, God will indeed speak to me though those songs. No matter what I’m going through in life. And no matter what station I’m listening to. Music has always spoken to me on one level or another. And God regularly uses music to convey some message to me that speaks into my current circumstances.

If you need help with the concept, simply imagine it is God Himself singing these songs to you. Or, a song you might sing to God. Here are a few songs / lyrics with Kingdom principles that come to mind. You can follow the link included to listen the full song. Imagine. Enjoy!

“Umbrella” by Rihanna

1 – You had my heart and we’ll never be world apart
Maybe in magazines but you’ll still be my star
Baby, ’cause in the dark you can see shiny cars
And that’s when you need me there, with you I’ll always share
Because

Chorus – When the sun shines we’ll shine together
Told you I’ll be here forever
Said, I’ll always be your friend
Took an oath, I’mma stick it out ’till the end

Now that it’s raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella (repeat)

2 – These fancy things will never come in between
You’re part of my entity, here for Infinity
When the war has took it’s part
When the world has dealt it’s cards
If the hand is hard together we’ll mend your heart
Because

Chorus

3 – You can run into my arms, it’s okay don’t be alarmed
(Come into me)
(There’s no distance in between our love)
So gonna let the rain pour, I’ll be all you need and more
Because

Chorus

Here’s the video for Umbrella

See what I mean??? I can totally hear God saying, or even singing, those words to me. Rihanna’s “moves” in the video? Lol! No, that’s not God. Regardless, if you’re mature enough to listen past the visual distractions of this world you can hear God speaking to everyone of us loud and clear. Furthermore, He’s speaking through everything, not just inside the church buildings. Here’s another one…

“Thunder” by Imagine Dragons

1 – Just a young gun with a quick fuse
I was uptight, wanna let loose
I was dreaming of bigger things
And wanna leave my own life behind
Not a yes sir, not a follower
Fit the box, fit the mold
Have a seat in the foyer, take a number
I was lightning before the thunder

Chorus – Thunder, thunder
Thunder, thun’, thunder
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder, thunder
Thunder, thun’, thunder
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder
Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder
Thunder, feel the thunder

Lightning and the thunder
Thunder, thunder
Thunder

2 – Kids were laughing in my classes
While I was scheming for the masses
Who do you think you are?
Dreaming ’bout being a big star
They say you’re basic, they say you’re easy
You’re always riding in the back seat
Now I’m smiling from the stage while
You were clapping in the nose bleeds

Chorus
Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder, thunder
Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder, thunder
Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder, thunder
Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder, thunder
Thunder, feel the thunder
Lightning and the thunder, thunder
Thunder, thunder, thunder
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder
Thunder, thunder, thunder
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder
Thunder, thunder, thunder
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder
Thunder, thunder, thunder
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder

Bold Emphasis is mine.

Here’s the video for Thunder

This one, hmmm. I can tell you it’s not the just the interesting dance moves of the video that grabs me. (Those “alien” characters do kinda give me the creeps though. Glad I mainly hear this on the radio. Lol!) Nor is it the catchy rhythm of the music that catches my mind. No, it’s mainly the chorus lines that scream out at me.

The words of the chorus remind me that Lightning, Thunder, Fire, and Clouds in scripture speak of God’s presence and His voice (Exodus 19:9, 16-19, Rev 4:5, etc.) Lightning is His presence (Mt 28:3, Mt 24:27, etc). And thunder is His voice (Job 37:4-5, Psalm 29, etc.). Now think about those lyrics, HE was Lightning before HE was Thunder. HE is present before He speaks. Thinking of that, the chorus of that song gives me chills.

There Are So Many!

Those are just a couple of examples spelled out for you. There are so many more songs that do this. A few more examples are: Alanis Morisette’s “You Learn”, Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”, and Evanescence “Bring Me Back To Life”, and on, and on. I’m not sure if God is simply speaking to us all through unusual songs. Or, if these artists are Christians and their true Kingdom beliefs are coming through their music in a kaleidescope of God’s character reaching the world through the radio-waves. Now that’s something for us all to contemplate!

Ultimately, I think God can, and does, use everything in our environments to speak, testify if you will, of His presence and His character. And He’ll do this despite the beliefs, or lack thereof, of the humans involved. So, God is speaking. And He’s speaking everywhere.

The question is not “to, or not to” pay attention to something. The question is… Are we willing to see past the offenses of this world to truly hear and see the deeper things God is so plainly showing us? Indeed, may we all have the eyes to see and the ears to hear.

  1. Last Sunday morning, for no apparent reason, I found myself singing Uncle John’s Band and thinking how truthful it was for a bunch of druggie hippies. Mostly this: “Well, the first days are the hardest days, don’t you worry anymore. Because when life looks like easy street, there is danger at the door.” That’s true. Comfort can be an enemy; you see it repeatedly in the Bible with Israel.
